2009 Big W Townsville to Cairns Bike Ride
Lions Sponsored Group

Last year's ride was another huge success and our most successful, over 250 bicycle riders successfully completed a combined 95,000klms of safe travelling from Townsville to Cairns from the 30th July to the 1st August. They were ably supported by 40 support crew in 30 support vehicles. With sponsorship and individual donations including Lions Clubs, we raised a total of $563,744 for the Children's Cancer Institute Australia.
The annual Townsville to Cairns bike ride was started twelve years ago by a few of amateur bike riders, one who happened to be a Lion. All were personally touched through their families by the tragedy of Childhood Cancer. The small committee that yearly undertakes this very professionally run project are mostly bike riders, with a couple of local Lions, and this committee as well the 250+ riders that register each year, are totally committed raising money for CCIA and Research into Childhood Cancer. All the logistic and administrative costs are met by an entry fee paid by the riders and support personnel, also each rider has a personal commitment to raise a minimum $500 donation, the rest is raised by sponsorship.

2010 is the twelfth year of this amazing North Queensland project we are hoping again to have a positive Lions profile and much needed publicity in this important North Queensland project while also assisting raising necessary funds for CCIA (a Lions supported project) and their unique research into preventing Childhood Cancer.
